The group stage ends on June 27, 2026 — and then the real tournament begins. The 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage is a 32-match, single-elimination sprint from June 28 to July 19 that ends with the Final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. For the first time in World Cup history, this edition includes a Round of 32 — a direct result of the tournament's expansion to 48 teams. That means eight additional knockout matches, more nations reaching the knockout rounds, and a longer, more dramatic bracket than any previous World Cup. Every match in the knockout stage from the quarter-finals onward is played in the United States. The semi-finals are at AT&T Stadium in Dallas (July 14) and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (July 15). The Third Place Play-off is at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 18. And the Final — the match that will be watched by the largest television audience in the history of sport — is at MetLife Stadium on July 19. This guide covers every knockout round: confirmed dates, kick-off times in EDT, venues, and a full breakdown of the bracket structure so you can track your team's path from the Round of 32 all the way to the Final. For the full group stage schedule and city-by-city fixture guide, see our complete World Cup 2026 schedule and fixtures guide. Once you know which knockout matches you're targeting, our World Cup 2026 ticket guide and trip planning checklist will help you build the trip.
World Cup 2026 is the first edition to feature a Round of 32, producing 32 knockout stage matches compared to 16 at all previous tournaments. The expanded format means that 32 nations — rather than 16 — experience the knockout stage. All quarter-finals, both semi-finals, the Third Place Play-off, and the Final are hosted exclusively in the United States.

How the World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Works
Before getting to the schedule, it helps to understand how 32 teams are determined from the group stage — because the Round of 32 bracket depends on the combination of third-placed teams that qualify.
Who Qualifies for the Knockout Stage
From the 12 groups of four teams each: the top two teams from every group (24 teams) automatically advance to the Round of 32. The 8 best third-placed teams across all groups also advance — decided by points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then disciplinary record. This produces 32 teams for the Round of 32.
- 24 automatic qualifiers: winners and runners-up from all 12 groups
- 8 wildcard qualifiers: the best third-placed teams from across the 12 groups
- Total: 32 teams in the knockout stage
- The specific Round of 32 bracket slots for the 8 third-placed teams depend on which groups they come from — FIFA published 495 possible bracket combinations in Annex C of the tournament regulations
Knockout Stage Rules: No Draws
Every match in the knockout stage must produce a winner. If a match is level after 90 minutes of regular time, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played. If the score remains level after extra time, a penalty shootout determines the winner. There are no replays, no away-goals rules, and no aggregate scores — every match is a standalone, must-win encounter.
- 90 minutes regular time → if level: 30 minutes extra time (two 15-minute halves)
- If still level after extra time → penalty shootout (5 kicks each, then sudden death)
- No draws possible at any knockout stage match
- Substitutions: 5 allowed in regular time; a 6th is permitted if extra time is played
Bracket Uncertainty Is Part of the Planning
Because specific matchups in the Round of 32 (for the 8 third-placed team slots) cannot be fully determined until the group stage ends on June 27, fans targeting knockout matches should focus on date-and-venue combinations rather than specific teams. This is especially important for semi-final and Final tickets, where the competing teams are always unknown in advance.

⚠️ Times Not Yet Fully Confirmed — We'll Update as FIFA Locks the Schedule
Venues and dates for all Round of 32 matches are confirmed. Kick-off times for several fixtures are still subject to final broadcast scheduling decisions. We will update this table as soon as FIFA publishes official confirmed times. Always cross-check at FIFA.com or your national broadcaster before travelling to a match.
Round of 16 Schedule: July 4–7, 2026
The Round of 16 concentrates all eight matches into four days across USA host cities (plus one Mexico City fixture). All remaining matches from this round onward are in the United States except the July 5 Estadio Azteca match. Winners advance to the quarter-finals.
Planning for Round of 16 Travel
The Round of 16 spans four consecutive days (July 4–7) across five cities. Because teams are not confirmed until Round of 32 results are in, fans should buy tickets for the venue-date combination they can make, not a specific matchup. July 4 is US Independence Day — factor in road closures, parades, and significantly elevated transport demand in Houston and New York/NJ. The one non-USA venue in this round is Estadio Azteca in Mexico City (July 5). Between Round of 32 (ends July 3/4) and the Round of 16 (starts July 4), some teams may be playing again within 48–72 hours — worth keeping in mind if you're following a specific nation. Hotel demand across multiple US host cities spikes simultaneously during this window, so wherever you end up, search reviewed options by neighbourhood on TripAdvisor before prices move.

Quarter-Final Tickets: Best Value in the Knockout Rounds
Quarter-final tickets are widely considered the best value in the World Cup knockout stage — four guaranteed elite-level matches at top-tier venues, with tremendous atmosphere but without the extreme premium pricing of the semi-finals and Final. Quarter-final tickets for Boston, LA, Miami, and Kansas City are still available on Ticketmaster — prices will rise significantly as the group stage progresses.

Semi-Final Schedule: July 14–15, 2026
The two World Cup 2026 semi-finals are hosted at AT&T Stadium in Arlington (Dallas) and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta — two of the largest and most spectacular venues in American sports. Semi-final tickets are among the most sought-after in world sport.
Semi-Final 1: AT&T Stadium, Dallas — July 14, 2026
AT&T Stadium is an absolute monster of a venue — 80,000 standard capacity, expandable to 94,000, with a retractable roof and the largest column-free interior in the world. If you've never been inside, set aside some time before the match just to take it in. Getting there is the main logistical challenge: there is no direct public transit from Dallas airports to the stadium, so if you haven't sorted your transfer yet, pre-book now — match-day Ubers out of DFW can be a nightmare. We've got the full breakdown of transport options, parking strategy, and which side of the stadium to sit in our AT&T Stadium transport and parking guide. For accommodation, Arlington itself has solid options within walking distance of the stadium — see what fellow fans are saying on TripAdvisor for up-to-date reviews near the venue.
- Date: Tuesday, July 14, 2026
- Venue: AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas
- Capacity: ~80,000 standard (up to 94,000 for large events)
- Nearest airport: DFW (Dallas/Fort Worth International) — approximately 17 miles
- Transport: No direct public transit — pre-book a Kiwitaxi fixed-price transfer or use the designated rideshare pickup point 10–15 minutes walk from the stadium
- Where to stay: Arlington's hotel strip along Collins Street sits closest to the stadium — book well ahead as semi-final week inventory near the venue moves fast
Semi-Final 2: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta — July 15, 2026
Mercedes-Benz Stadium is everything a modern ground should be — a retractable roof, a capacity of around 75,000, and genuinely one of the nicest facilities you'll experience at this tournament. Getting in and out is painless by US stadium standards: the MARTA Red or Gold Line runs directly from Hartsfield-Jackson Airport to Vine City station, which is right next to the stadium (about 25 minutes, around $2.50). It's one of the few World Cup venues where driving is the wrong call — take the train. For the full stadium layout and sightlines, see our Mercedes-Benz Stadium match-day guide. The best-reviewed hotels for the match are around Midtown and Downtown Atlanta — fans on TripAdvisor rate the Midtown corridor highly for its walkability and food options.
- Date: Wednesday, July 15, 2026
- Venue: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia
- Capacity: ~75,000
- Nearest airport: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL) — approximately 10 miles
- Best transport: MARTA Red or Gold Line from Airport station to Vine City — direct, approximately 25 minutes, ~$2.50. Do not drive.
- Where to stay: Midtown Atlanta and Castleberry Hill are the best-reviewed neighbourhoods for match-day access — browse current availability on TripAdvisor
Third Place Play-off: Miami — July 18, 2026
The World Cup 2026 Third Place Play-off (Bronze Final) is held on Saturday July 18 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The two semi-final losers contest this match. Third Place match tickets are typically more accessible in price and availability than other late-round knockout fixtures.
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens
Hard Rock Stadium sits in Miami Gardens, about 16 miles north of downtown Miami — home of the Miami Dolphins and one of the most atmospheric outdoor venues in the tournament. Getting there without a car takes some planning: the Metrobus Route 27 runs from downtown Miami, but on match day you're better off pre-booking a fixed-price transfer to avoid surge pricing. The easiest base for this match is anywhere along the Brickell or Downtown Miami corridor — hotels here put you close to food, nightlife, and multiple transfer options. Worth checking what fans rate most highly near the stadium on TripAdvisor before committing — the Miami market covers a wide geographic area and hotel quality varies significantly by neighbourhood.
- Date: Saturday, July 18, 2026
- Venue: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida
- Capacity: 67,518
- Nearest airports: Miami International (MIA) — approximately 14 miles; Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) — approximately 20 miles
- Transport: Metrobus Route 27 from downtown Miami. Pre-booked private transfer is the most reliable match-day option.
- Ticket note: Third Place match tickets are typically among the most available and competitively priced in the knockout stage

The Final: MetLife Stadium, July 19, 2026
The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final is on Sunday July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey — the largest stadium in the United States and one of the most connected major event venues in the country. It will be watched by an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide.
Final Quick Facts
MetLife sits 8 miles from midtown Manhattan in East Rutherford, New Jersey — 82,500 capacity, home to the Giants and Jets, and about as far from the 'intimate stadium' experience as it's possible to get. On Final day it will be the centre of the world. If you want the full picture on sightlines, best blocks to target, and what the concourses are actually like, we've written it all up in our MetLife Stadium guide.
- Date: Sunday, July 19, 2026
- Kick-off: approximately 3:00 PM EDT / 8:00 PM BST / 9:00 PM CEST — subject to final FIFA confirmation
- Venue: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey
- Capacity: ~82,500
- Distance from Manhattan: approximately 8 miles (Midtown)
- Nearest airports: Newark Liberty International (EWR) — recommended; JFK and LaGuardia also serve the area
How to Get to MetLife Stadium for the Final
Final day transport is the one thing you genuinely need to plan early. With 82,500 ticketed fans plus tens of thousands of non-ticketed supporters converging on New Jersey, every mode of transport will be under serious pressure. The NJ Transit Meadowlands Rail Line — which runs a dedicated shuttle from Secaucus Junction directly to the stadium on event days — is your only reliable option. From Newark Airport (EWR), take NJ Transit to Penn Station Newark, then to Secaucus Junction, and board the Meadowlands shuttle from there. Build in 2–3 hours minimum from your hotel to your seat, and do not attempt to drive. For a full breakdown of every transport route, parking situation, and which exits to use after the final whistle, see our MetLife Stadium guide. On accommodation: the New York metro hotel market for Final weekend (July 17–20) is moving quickly — TripAdvisor's filter for fan-reviewed hotels in Newark, Jersey City, and Hoboken is a good starting point for NJ Transit-accessible options.
- Fly into Newark (EWR) if possible — closest airport and best NJ Transit connections
- NJ Transit Meadowlands Rail Line: Secaucus Junction → MetLife Stadium on event days — the only reliable match-day transit option
- Do not drive on Final day — parking is extremely limited and road congestion begins 4+ hours before kick-off
- Book New Jersey or Manhattan accommodation early — Final weekend hotel inventory across the New York metro area is extremely limited
- Best areas to stay: Newark, Jersey City, Hoboken (NJ Transit access), or Midtown Manhattan (PATH or NJ Transit to Penn Station)

Knockout Stage Travel Planning Tips
Planning travel for knockout stage matches requires a different approach than the group stage — teams are unknown in advance, matches produce high-demand surges, and venues concentrate enormous crowds in short windows.
- Buy tickets for venue-date combinations, not teams: knockout tickets are issued per match number, with teams TBD — purchase the date and venue you can attend, not a specific nation's match. Search by venue on Ticketmaster.
- Sort accommodation as soon as you confirm your ticket: knockout round hotel demand in host cities is extreme — search reviewed options by area on TripAdvisor to find something with free cancellation while you finalise logistics
- Pre-book transfers for car-dependent venues: AT&T Stadium (Dallas), Hard Rock Stadium (Miami), and Gillette Stadium (Boston) all have limited or no viable public transit on match day — a pre-booked Kiwitaxi fixed-price transfer eliminates surge pricing risk
- Use public transit where available: MetLife Stadium (NJ Transit Meadowlands Line), Mercedes-Benz Stadium (MARTA), SoFi Stadium (Metro C Line), and Levi's Stadium (VTA shuttle) all have viable transit options — use them
- July 4 is US Independence Day: the Round of 16 begins on July 4 — expect road closures, parades, and significantly increased demand in Houston and New York/NJ
- Allow extra exit time for knockout games: penalty shootout scenarios mean matches can run to 120+ minutes — always plan your post-match exit strategy before entering the stadium
- Get travel insurance: knockout travel involves significant non-refundable commitments to flights, hotels, and tickets — cover yourself for cancellation, medical, and disruption scenarios. See our World Cup 2026 budget and cost guide for how to factor this into your trip budget
